Philips Christaan Visser (1882-1955)

In plaats van het voor hem geijkte pad in het familiebedrijf te volgen besloot Philips Christiaan Visser alpinist te worden. Zijn internationale contacten in de bergsport brachten hem op het idee de nog niet geëxploreerde delen van het Karakoram-gebergte te ontdekken. Visser volgde, samen met zijn vrouw Jenny Hooft, zijn passie, verkocht het familiebedrijf en trok naar Midden-Azië. Visser leidde tussen 1922 en 1935 vier succesvolle expedities naar de Karakoram. Daar exploreerde hij als onderzoeker enorme bergmassieven, grote gletsjers en dalen die niet op de landkaarten stonden. Bovendien publiceerde hij het meest gevarieerde Nederlandse oeuvre op het gebied van bergsport en glaciologie. Met zijn publicaties, lezingen en expedities inspireerde hij veel jonge alpinisten. Als bestuurder was hij van beslissende betekenis voor de groei en positionering van de in 1902 opgerichte Nederlandsche Alpen-Vereeniging. Zo groeide Philips Christiaan Visser uit tot Nederlands laatste ontdekkingsreiziger en bekendste bergsporter in de periode voor de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Na zijn expedities bracht Vissers diplomatieke carrière hem in Brits-Indië, Turkije en Zuid-Afrika. In 1948 werd hij ambassadeur in Moskou. Maarten Faas tekent in deze biografie voor het eerst het volledige veelbewogen leven op van Visser als bergbeklimmer, expeditieleider, ontdekkingsreiziger, glacioloog, diplomaat en auteur. Maarten Faas (1957) is sociaal wetenschapper, auteur en fervent alpinist. Hij stelde onder meer de Nederlandse bergsportcanon op en schreef over alpinisme in de Hoogtelijn en De Bergvriend.

I would not recommend this shelf. There are no instructions included - just a simple drawing of putting it together but nowhere says what drill bit size to use for the plastic anchors which are square on the end and not round. In addition, you cannot fully tighten the iron brackets or they won’t alight on the wall to hang the shelf. Each piece of metal piping has part of the black coating stripped off as well. And on top of that, the bottom of each shelf is unfinished and looks as though they used a filler to hide holes in the shelf. Not worth the money or the hassle.

Good shelf to upgrade my awkward kitchen!

This shelf is exactly what I was looking for for my awkward kitchen in my new house. Don't mind the plywood walls (who knows what the previous owners were thinking 🤣) but anyways, we had this awkward gap between the kitchen counters and the stove, so I got a stainless steel shelf to fill the gap and add some more counterspace, and I found this industrial style pipe shelving, which was the perfect size and height to fit in this gap on the wall and give us more storage/organization space. It's easy to assemble and hang up, and seems very strong and sturdy. It's a little heavy, but lightweight enough to hang easily. Right out of the box, it was disappointing to see some scuffs in the black paint on the piping, especially for the price. Luckily, the biggest scuff is in a pretty inconspicuous space so it's not a big deal. Definitely not worth returning to see if another one wouldn't have any scuffs (especially since many of the other reviews mentioned scuffs too). It's wabi sabi I suppose 😅 Also, not a single extra screw or hardware was included. Not a big deal, but screws are cheap enough to through in one extra just in case one is missing or lost. Overall, mostly happy with the purchase. The wood is solid and the shelf looks nice in my kicthen!
